The 4 Human Drives That Will Transform Your Life and Leadership

It starts with tapping into what I call the 4 Human Drives.

1. Aliveness: Own Your Morning, Own Your Day

Most people live in a 24-hour loop that feels more like a blur than a breakthrough. But what if you broke your day into three six-hour mini-days? That’s how I live—three in one. And it all starts with a powerful morning routine.

Wake up. Hydrate. Journal. Plan. Move your body. These simple steps give me clarity, energy, and courage before the world even begins asking for my attention.

I used to run every morning—20+ road races under my belt—until my stroke forced me to change. Now I journal, bike, reflect. And let me tell you: thinking on paper is a superpower. It’s where your magic lives.

2. Connection: Go Beyond the Text Message

In a world full of pings and likes, true human connection is rare—and priceless.

Pick up the phone. Go for coffee. Have a real conversation. When you isolate, you spiral. When you connect, you grow. I’ve seen this firsthand through hundreds of podcast interviews—those deep, curious conversations have built communities, opened doors, and created lifelong bonds.

Don’t just check the box. Be present. Be intentional. Go deeper.

3. Meaningful Purpose: Don’t Retire—Refire

I’ve heard it too often—people retire and two years later, they're gone. Not because their body gave out—but because their purpose did.

Whether you’re just starting out or considering life after work, ask yourself: What lights me up? What can I pursue that makes life feel full again?

For me, it’s coaching. It’s creating. It’s serving with Rotary. It’s this—sharing these human drives with you. That’s meaningful purpose. What’s yours?

4. Growth: Never Stop Leveling Up

You are either growing or you’re shrinking. There’s no standing still in life.
